Kerry O'Malley

So the incredible Kerry O'Malley will be my guest on March 7th.

Kerry most recently starred in the Broadway run of "White Christmas" and little known fact...she and I did our first Broadway show together..."Cyrano, The Musical".

In the show, I got blown up by some sort of exploding projectile and she lived a long and happy life.  Just another notch in the life of the D.B.G. (Dark Brooding Guy).

Anyway, Kerry is going to light up the stage...or floor and you're in for a special treat when she sings.

We've known each other for a very long time and as I continue on with this series I realize just how nice it is to have such great friends.

It's really an honor to know so many wonderful people, who also just happen to be incredibly talented.

So swing by on March 7th for a night of song and laughter.

Saturday Night

Getting ready for tomorrow night.  Julia and Rebecca will be there.  So excited.

We've also gotten posters in which we'll have for sale.  They'll carry us through March as well.  They look great!

I'm thinking about adding some 80's pop tunes done a bit more legit.  I always joke about the music I grew up on so I'm gonna do some of it.

Jeremy and I were toying with "Babe" from STYX.  I don't know why but that song always hit me. Dennis' voice just has that ring to it when he sings.  Pretty amazing.  Maybe "Open Arms" form Journey.

More great stuff.  And maybe even "Before I Gaze At You Again" from Camelot.  I know it's a woman's tune but it's so beautiful.

At any rate, I'm keeping some of the powerful tunes but add many more as we go along.  So, you'll see different shows each night.

I'm going to announce my first March guest tomorrow night.  She...yes she...rocks!

We're Extending!

We're extending...it's official.

You guys have been so very supportive and the shows have been such fun tat we're extending LOVE SONGS through March 28th.

There will be some different content, new songs (as well as some of the current selections) and by the way...give some suggestions and I'll see what we can do about putting them in.

We've already got three stellar guests lined up and I'll announce them very soon.

Here are a couple of stories on the extension.

It's still going to be every Saturday night and one Sunday on March 15th.  Come on down, have some fun, meet the new guests and send some song suggestions.

Last Night

Last night was filled with music.

I started off with one guest, Laura Osnes and then ended up with something like 15.

Here's Laura and I at the end of the show.

Paige and Patrick were a delight and then I had Andrew and his fellow students come in and sing another tune (like they did at the Holiday concert) plus we had a special guest, Niko who is on the fast track to fame.

Niko has opened people such as for Celine and Jewel and Chicago.  That was an unexpected treat.

Tomorrow night is the Broadway By The Year performance at Town Hall.  It's a great group of people that Scott Siegel has pulled together. The year will be 1924 and I'm singing:

What'll I Do and Serenade (plus there's a little comic number thrown in there. with a bunch of the guys).

Kerry O'Malley will be singing too, incidentally she'll be playing Abigail Adams in the 1776 at Papermill...and from what I understand, our very own Laruen Kennedy will be Martha Jefferson.

Oh yeah...it looks like I'll be doing 1776.  But it seems that most of you knew that before I did.  :)

We've got one week left in this round of LOVE SONGS and it's Julia Murney plus Rebecca Robbins with whom I did Tale.  Wait until you hear Rebecca.

Paige Davis & Patrick Page

So now I can announce.

Paige Davis and her husband Patrick Page will be joining Laura Osnes at my show on Saturday night Feb 21st.

Many of you might know Paige as the host of Trading Spaces...I've known her for a looong time. Old friends.

And you might also know her husband Patrick Page from his stellar performance as the Grinch in Broadway's How The Grinch Stole Christmas.  I'm delighted to have them joining me this Saturday.

Patrick and I also did Beauty and The Beast together...he was an amazing Lumiere.

Here are some links to the stories:

Wonderful Weekend

Was this a great weekend or what?  We had such a great time with the three shows and they were all so incredibly different!

Constantine, Morgan James,  Tim Shew, Lee Roy Reams, then new comers Daniel Zorovich and Jason Watson as well as my long time friend Todd Murray.

There was such an array of diversified talent.  It was amazing.

We're heading into this Saturday with Laura Osnes (who has just won the role of Nellie Forbush in Broadway's South Pacific...which should be fun when it comes to that little "interactive" number in my show).

We also have two guest who will be joining her.  I can't tell you who they are yet as the press release is going out tomorrow.  But here's a hint...they're married actually and one of them I've known since 1988.

OK click here for the tickets.  HERE

Wow!

Now that was a show...

I'm not talking about me...I'm talking about Morgan and Constantine.  I could have just sat there for hours listening to them both sing their you know what's off.

I mean holy mackerel!

For those of you who came, you know what I mean.

So we have some last minute guests for tonight.

The amazing Broadway legend Lee Roy Reams will be with me tonight as will the incredible Tim Shew.

Tim and I are going to try our hand at "Lilly's Eyes" a duet from The Secret Garden.

I have't sung that song since I the tour ended back in '92 but what a beautiful tune.  Doug Sills and I used to do it when we toured together in the show.  Now that was a cast...

The National Tour of The Secret Garden:

Doug Sills
Roger Bart
Audra McDonald

I mean come one...what a group.

OK see some of you tonight.

Happy Valentine's Day!

A Valentine's Lesson in The Phantom of the Opera

I had not planned to write anything about the Phantom of the Opera for Valentine’s Day, but let’s face it - when the story calls to me, I can’t resist.

One day a year on February 14th, the world is focused on one word – love. Every human being alive, from the day we are born, craves for it in one form or another. Whether it’s the love of a friend, sibling, parent, or mate, we want it. Why? It is love that nourishes our soul and keeps us whole. Just like our human bodies cannot live without food and water, so our soul cannot live without experiencing love, in some form, in order to be healthy. We use the term “love starved” and rightly so. Without it, we shrivel up to nothing but skin and bones emotionally, like our bodies would in response to the lack of food and water.

I cannot help but think of Erik’s words as penned by Leroux. These few words ring in my soul constantly when I ponder the message in the Phantom of the Opera.

“All I wanted was to be loved for myself."

It’s what our soul cries for – unconditional love. It’s that place where we can take our mask off, reveal the ugliest part of who we are, and still find acceptance and love in spite of it all.

Why can’t we give that gift to others? Why do we wish to change people rather than loving them for who they are? What is it that motivates us as humans to crave love so desperately, but we find it so difficult to give in return? Had the Phantom lived in the 21st century, would we have given him the love and acceptance he cried for or taken him to a plastic surgeon instead?

This Valentine’s day, remember Erik and the cry of his heart and give love to those who cry for the same acceptance. Perhaps you'll find it in return.

Your obedient servant,

The Phantom’s Student

Bull Riding, Dog Shows and Eating Sticks

What is the purpose of Bull Riding?

I just saw a commercial for it on ESPN...I've never been one for that sport. I always worry about the Bull.  Poor thing getting those spikes stuck into it's side.

But...I did see the Kennel Show today for a bit while I was taking a break from work.  That I think is fun.

To watch all the dogs parading around the ring makes me smile.
They are so well cared for and it's wonderful to see all of the different breads.

Wouldn't it be fun to have a show of rescue dogs?   Give those pups that have been though rough patches a chance to shine.

All I know is that my dogs are connoisseurs of bark and sticks.  That seems to be their main focus on our walks thought the parks.

Many a time have I found that one or both of them have been hiding a small stick in their mouth on the journey home.  Only to drop it happily on the kitchen floor as a present to me.   I'm so proud.

By the way....Playbill.com ran a story about Constantine today.  Here it is:  C's Story

And here's the link for tickets.  Tickets  They are seriously going fast.

Constantine Maroulis

Constantine will be my second guest this Friday night 2/13.

Obviously Constantine brought such power to American Idol, but I think more importantly he's come back to the theatre world.

He'll be starring on Broadway (again) in "Rock of Ages."

Having Morgan and Constantine together in one night...stellar.

This one is selling out quickly...here's the story on BroadwayWorld.com

Great show

We had a great night tonight.

Both Jenny and Mark hit the ball out of the park with their songs.  I was so honored to have them there.

Michael Weiner (composer of the new musical version of "Second Hand Lions") Jenny and Jeremy

Jenny...being....Jenny.

I did realize tonight that I have to get new wings for the show...

Next Friday we've got a great show...Morgan James and another amazing guest that I'll announce very, very soon.

How It All Started

It's officially been one year since I started my blog. As the days grow closer to publication, it's been a time of reflection. The "Music of the Night" never ends. After a few posts, I put a tracker on the site from Google Analytics just to see if anybody was reading. The tracker reports the number of visitors, country location, referring websites, keywords, etc. Below are some astounding statistics:
  • People from 95 countries worldwide have visited the blog.
  • Referrals from other websites/blogs total 279
  • 3,906 unique search terms were entered directing individuals to my site.
It's difficult for me to "phantom" the continued popularity of this story. When individuals use search engines, they enter all sorts of keywords on some particular aspect of the story, whether it's a character, place, or thing. It's not the popularity of this blog that astounds me. On the contrary, if it wasn't for the popularity of the Phantom of the Opera, I'm sure there would be little notice of my posts.

My book contains how I started this journey on Blogger. It is the "Introduction," which I have posted below. I hope you enjoy.

"He had let go of me at last and was dragging himself about on the floor, uttering terrible sobs. And then he crawled away like a snake, went into his room, closed the door and left me alone to my reflections.”

Gaston Leroux published Fantôme de l’Opera in 1910. One hundred years later, the basic premise of the story is a worldwide phenomenon. Published in a variety of forms and immortalized on stage and film, the story never dies. Writers continue to pen sequels, websites and forums continue to inundate the Internet, literature students dissect its hidden meaning in the classroom, and scholars and psychologists publish commentaries.

Until January of 2008, I ignored the story of The Phantom of the Opera. Never required to read the original work in high school or junior college, I only knew it was a story about some creepy man who lived underneath an opera house. I found no interest in pursuing the literature or watching older film versions. In addition, I never attended a stage production in my entire life, so the thought of seeing Webber’s play did not enter my mind.

One day while surfing the Internet, I came across a small three-minute clip of the 2004 movie of The Phantom of the Opera. After watching, my curiosity was finally aroused, especially after feasting my eyes on handsome Gerard Butler. I decided to rent the DVD of the Webber/Schumacher movie. Like anyone else, I popped a bag of microwave popcorn, sat on my green recliner in my living room, lifted my leg rest, and pushed play. The next two hours profoundly touched my heart, and I became obsessed with the story. The movie did not satisfy my hunger. I purchased Gaston Leroux’s original version, devoured it in a few days, and cried over Erik’s pleading words:

“I am not really wicked. Love me and you shall see! All I wanted was to be loved for myself.”

After numerous dabs of tissues catching my blubbering tears, I knew I loved the story. It touched the core of my heart, and after reading that 100,000,000 people worldwide have flocked to see The Phantom of the Opera on stage, I felt compelled to write about the characters, emotions, sets, and music that burst with symbolism.

Out of a fluke, I started a blog on Google’s Blogger entitled, “Lessons from The Phantom of the Opera” (http://thephantomslessons.blogspot.com). When I did so, I did not intend to make a big deal about the site. The blog was a place to dump my thoughts, as most blogs are. I chose the pen name of the Phantom’s Student. After all, the Phantom was the great tutor and Christine Daaé the student.

Fifty posts later, 28,000 hits from 95 countries worldwide, as I pen this introduction, the blog has grown beyond my wildest imaginations. For me, The Phantom of the Opera is a psychological playground. By no means am I psychologist. I am just a human being having searched my entire life for unconditional love. Redemption and longing for acceptance is the major theme throughout the story, and I believe that is why so many people relate to the Phantom’s plight.

I have written Lessons from The Phantom of the Opera from my heart. It is how the story reveals itself to me and contains my own reflections. It is free from the influence of other commentaries regarding its hidden meanings. I have poured my heart into dissecting every morsel of The Phantom of the Opera for an entire year. Where research was required on any particular subject, especially in the area of psychology, I have noted the sources and given credit where credit is due. There are Biblical references in my articles, because of obvious analogies throughout the story.

My articles touch on the characters, emotions, symbols, and places. I dissect the story from a human standpoint examining all versions, whether it is Gaston Leroux’s original work, Webber’s stage play, or the Webber/Schumacher movie. Some articles are purely informational and include historical background, while others examine the driving motivations of the characters. Inspiration for a variety of subjects birthed from my own life experiences. There is humor and stark honesty woven throughout, along with a few personal confessions. In some articles, I have kept my mask on and in others taken it off. My earlier articles are a bit short, but as you can see, as time progressed and I became more immersed in Leroux’s version they expanded.

You will find that I tend to provoke readers to think, reflect, and apply the scenes and actions to their own lives. At the end of each chapter, I have added a special section entitled, “The View from Box 5.” The section contains a series of questions to spark further thought on your part, as well as an area to write your own personal reflections and application. My views and interpretations are not the final word, by any means, and the story may reveal itself to you differently. It is my sincere hope you will find more inspiration hidden inside the story, as you view it through our own opera glasses from Box 5.

Why am I publishing my blog? It is because you have expressed the desire to see it in written form; and frankly, publishing a book has been my life’s dream. You have inspired me in my journey through your numerous comments and personal emails conveying how the articles move, inspire, and encourage. You have no idea what great joy and purpose it brings to my life.

In closing, I would like to thank the wonderful artists involved in making The Phantom of the Opera: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe, and Joel Schumacher, plus many others. A heartfelt thank you to the stars that play the characters we love on stage and in the movie: The Phantom, Christine, Raoul, Carlotta, Madame Giry, Meg, the Managers and others. Of course, Gaston Leroux has long since passed away. It is a shame he does not know the ultimate success of his work. If he were alive today, I would be the first to give him a standing ovation for penning this timeless masterpiece, and I am sure you would join me.
Happy reading and reflection; and remember, you are loved!

“I am loved for my own sake.”

Morgan on FOX and McVey in Studio

Saturday night...show number 2.

Morgan james did the Strategy Room on FOX today and talked up the show.  Looks like she'll be back on next week too.

Mark McVey stopped by the studio today to run some stuff.  Here are a couple of shots.

Mark running down a medley he has planned for the night.

Jeremy looking over one of my tunes.

The very console where many of Linda Eder's CD's were mixed and where Jeremy makes his magic.

(Yes, that is a Lava Lamp in the background..and that pile of paper you see on the end of the console is my entire set list for the evening).

Check out this hallway...just a portion of what's hanging in the studio.

Thunderin' Thursday

Was it cold today...or was it COLD?!

When I woke up it was 18 degrees.  Thank god for North Face...

Here's another shot from the snow filled shoot of a couple of days ago.

Different person believe it or not.  The photograph is pretty much as is.

On the show front, I've solidified three more guests (four actually as one is a couple).  I'll announce them soon as the press release goes out.

As a reminder, this coming week I've got both Jenny Powers and Mark McVey.  Anyone who is planning to come this Saturday is in for a real treat.

I'm gonna be with Mark in studio tomorrow so I'll get some photos of that.

Morgan Work Session

So today was a busy day.  I found myself running all over the city and rushed back to Jeremy's studio by 5 pm to have a work session with Morgan James.

She's picked some pretty cool tunes.

And oh...we've decided to try and do a photo journal of the concerts.  So here's our first go at it.  You get to catch us at work behind the scenes.  Hope you like it...let me know.

In the photo below, Morgan and Jeremy were running a Blues tune here.  This song is gonna kick some....you know what!

Below Morgan sitting at the sound console.  This studio is the same studio where Frank Wildhorn does most of his work with Jeremy.  It's also where we recorded the Dracula CD.

Learning a potential duet with me...?

Can't wait to see you all there...

NYC 2009

So some of you know that one of my favorite past times is photography.  Well, I was out with the dogs today and snapped a couple of shot...

Here's one.

There is such beauty in the city and I often forget to just stop and look.  That's what photography does for me.  It forces me to stop and look.

Friday the 13th!

Spooky?  Unlucky?  Not for those who are coming to the show that night.  We're going to have some real treats in store for the Friday the 13th show.

There will be some surprise guests that have not been announced (that'll be fun) and it's also the start of the Valentine's weekend which is always heart warming.

There were some great stories on the show.  Check them out...
