1st Show

Well tonight was the first Love Songs concert and it went fairly well considering.

I think the mammals behaved themselves nicely and the flying only had a minor glitch.  :)

First let me send apologies to Rae and Evan...I totally forgot to sing Happy Birthday, which I meant to do.  So...Happy Birthday!

Gerry Steichen played tonight on the fly and he was amazing given that we had such short rehearsal time.

We've got so much planed for next week not to mention having both Jenny Powers AND Mark McVey as guests.  I'm very excited about it.

See you there!

The Lasso

"No one knows better than he how to throw the Punjab lasso, for he is the king of stranglers even as he is the prince of conjurers."

Today we’re going to examine the dark side of Erik, once again, and talk about one of his skills that earned him the title of “king of stranglers.” Occasionally, I get an email with the question what does the term “keep your hand at the level of your eyes” mean? It actually comes from Leroux’s version, where the Persian tells Raoul about Erik’s uncanny skill of being able to strangle his victims with his Punjab lasso.

Apparently, Erik learned this skill of the Punjab lasso while living in India. He practiced his art by strangling men condemned to death in front of applauding audiences. (Author shudders at the not so pretty picture.) Of course, we know this is how poor Joseph Buquet ended up swinging from the catwalk above, from the lasso made out of catgut. Erik was carrying out an execution.

Madame Giry warns both Joseph Buquet and Raoul de Chagny to keep their hands at the level of their eyes if they encounter the Phantom. Why? As explained by the Persian to Raoul, it was the only means of protection for an intended victim. When the lasso is swung around one’s neck, if your arm is up and the hand at the level of your eye, it catches both the arm and the neck, thereby allowing you to loosen the lasso and go free. Listen up and remember that little tip next time you’re walking around uninvited in the Opera Cellars.

Did Joseph or Raoul listen to the advice? Well, the answer is quite obvious. I bet they wished they had while they were hanging from the end of a rope. One died for his mistake, and the other almost died, all because they didn’t remember the warning.

Raoul failed to heed the advice. Instead, he let his guard down and turned the other way to watch the gate drop only to end up caught by the Phantom’s rope. It was a moment of weakness, and Erik took advantage of it. Stress and danger in our lives can often cloud our ability to think straight or act defensively, and so was the case with Raoul.

Let’s face it. Life is filled with warnings how to escape danger, which we often forget, ignore, or don't take to heart. We let our guard down, get distracted, and end up in trouble. We make poor choices under duress and put ourselves at risk. Had Raoul taken the warning seriously and kept his eyes on the Phantom the entire time by keeping his hands at the level of his eyes, it would not have given Erik the upper hand. Instead, he put himself into a less than comfortable position of strangulation.

Take the time to ponder. Has anyone given you any advice for your own good lately you’ve failed to follow or take to heart? Are there warnings and caution signs flashing all around you that you choose to ignore? Have you let your guard down? Are you distracted and not paying attention to danger coming your way? Life is tough enough without allowing it to strangle the life out of us, so pay attention and keep your hand at the level of your eyes.

Your obedient servant,
The Phantom's Student

Morgan James

So we have yet another addition to our concerts...

Morgan James

Will join me on Friday, February 13th.

Morgan most recently played Sheila in "Hair" at Arizona Theatre Company.

She was a featured soloist in Bernstein's  "Mass" with the Balitmore Symphony at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center...among a host of other things.

She's also a Julliard grad and has one of the most versatile voices I've ever heard.  She goes from classic to pop in the blink of an eye.

You'll truly enjoy her singing.

BroadwayWorld Story about Morgan: Click me

By the way, my interview with ira Kleinman will air this Friday, January 30th at 2 pm on WVNJ-AM (1160 on the dial) and www.WVNJ.com.

Check it out.

J. Mark McVey

So added to the February 7th line-up is one of the greatest voices on the planet...

J. Mark McVey

For those of you who have heard Mark sing...you know what I mean...

For those of you who haven't...you must come and hear him.

When I was last with him he sang 'Bring Him Home' and I was weeping openly as his voice carried through the hall.

So you're gonna get a double header (well triple header actually).  Jenny Powers, Mark McVey (and me).

Academy Awards and Small Mammals

So they announced the Academy Award nominations today and I was so pleased to see that Amy Adams got her second nod.  She's a great gal and I've known her since she first got to LA.

It's so wonderful to see nice people succeeding and Amy is one of those nice people.  Here's a shout out to Amy...Congrats!

Jeremy and I were in the studio again today for a couple of hours working on some new material. Looks like we might throw in a Wildhorn tune that no one has ever heard.

Plus we're working on an audience participation section that should (fingers crossed) be loads of fun.  Let's just say that there are small mammals involved in this one...don't ask, you'll have to come and see.

New York 1

We had a great day today.  I did an interview with NY1 about our shows.  So exciting!

Frank DiLella came over the Sardi's while Jeremy and I were rehearsing.  We worked through a couple of songs and then I sang through "If Ever I Would Leave You" for the camera.  Frank did a short interview and we chatted a bit about how these shows came about.

Not sure when it will air but it was wonderful to spend some time with Frank.  He's such a nice guy.

We're really excited about this show and the guests that we have planned are going to blow you away.  The interactive sections will be a little different than the last go round, but change is good isn't it?

More guest announcements will be coming soon so keep your eyes peeled here.

Super Bowl and Yogurt

Today the girls and I watched football.  OK, I watched football while the girls watched me.  Not altogether true, but sort of.

In the morning I watched some of the preinaugural proceedings which were cool until I found out that they weren't allowed to show any of the concert performers because HBO had a deal to air them later on.  But it was still memorable.

I was at Clinton's first inauguration as I happened to be in DC with The Secret Garden playing the Kennedy Center at that time.  That was a day to remember.  Thousands of people lining the Mall in a sense of anticipation. I'll never forget it.

Anyway in between Obama and Football, we took the baby outside for a nice walk (it was much more mild out than yesterday) and had a nice brunch with a good friend.  It's always nice to get the baby outside for a long stroll or two, she loves it, looking around at all the sites.  It's much more difficult given the temperatures but we keep her bundled up snug as a bug in a rug and she usually falls asleep within about 15 minutes of the walk.  Sleeps so peacefully.

OK some updates:

Here are some links to stories about my concerts from Playbill.com

We've now got:
 Lauren Kennedy set for 12/31
Jenny Powers set for 2/7

and...the amazing

Julia Murney for 2/28.  See the articles below.

Off to eat my yogurt, fat free, sugar free and down right tasty!

Obama Express

I watched the 'Obama Express' a bit today.  It's amazing to see how just a little bit of optimism goes a long, long way.

No matter what your political beliefs this is certainly a time for change.  It's inevitable.  There is too much going on around us to ignore.  Most of us are affected by it on a daily basis and we are in the midst of perhaps one of the most crucial times in many of ours lives.

I remember my father telling me about growing up in the late 20's and 30's.  Very different times, yet so similar in many ways.  The depression had left little money and people literally had to reinvent themselves.  What was once a land of opportunity had a become a land of self-doubt and questioning.

Well out of that era we grew.  We regained our confidence and began making choices that would eventually lead us to become the most powerful Nation in the world.   We still have that distinction and now it's time to realign our values, realign our thinking and get back to work.  It's time to regain our confidence.

I sense confidence in Obama.  I don't get the feeling that there is over-confidence, just simple confidence and a sense of reality.

Confidence is defined by Random House as: "full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing." And self-confidence as; "realistic confidence in one's own judgement, ability, power, etc."

Confidence doesn't mean that one has all the answers or will be able to solve all the problems by themselves.  Confidence, to me, means having the courage to rise to the challenge at hand, to give everything one has toward a certain goal, to acknowledge that one needs help in a certain area and ask for it.

And...knowing that if mistakes are made, and they inevitably will be as no one is perfect, that we learn from them and grow from them to make a stronger, more educated decision the next time.

It is an exciting time.  And a time of opportunity for us all to look at where we are, take stock of how we live and have the confidence to forge ahead into the future.

I'm excited about creating opportunities.  It's what I did with these concerts I'm doing.  From nothing, we create something and from that something we create something else.

I'm excited to share these creations with you, and in effect, you have all helped me to create this by being there at the shows...so in essence we are sharing a mutual "create."  Thanks for that.

By the way, BroadwayWorld has a story up about Lauren Kennedy and the Love Songs show. Here it is below.

So come on down, heck come on down a couple of times.  That's why we did that $25 ticket and they're still pretty good seats.  Who's ready to get up and sing?

Artwork

So those of you who came to the Holiday Concerts will remember the program cover art that the great Tim Hartman created for me.

Well he's done it again for the Love Songs series.  It's a bit different, a little less 'Carton' and a little more (OK a lot more) me.  I like it so a big thanks to Tim.

We've got some interesting ideas we've been playing with over the past few days in terms of music choices.  Not sure we'll have time to implement them all, but you know me...might just throw something in at the last minute unrehearsed.

I spoke with Dennis DeYoung a couple of days ago about some music.  I'm going to work on a couple of tunes from his Hunchback that you guys haven't heard.  It's beautiful music, has that pop/legit cross over feel to it.

For those of you on the east coast...stay warm.  I couldn't believe it when I walked outside today.  Incredibly cold.

So...come in a warm your heart with a love song or two: Love Songs Tickets

Guest #2 (But really #1)

My second guest (who will actually be my fist guest) is the incredible:

Lauren Kennedy

Lauren will appear with me on Saturday, January 31st and I'm jazzed that she'll be the first guest in the new concert series.

Her Broadway credits include The Lady Of The Lake in 'Spamalot', 'Sunset Boulevard' with Glen Close, 'Side Show' as Daisy Hilton and 'Les Miserables' as Fontine.  Among many others...she also played Nellie Forbush in Trevor Nunn's Royal National Theatre production of South Pacific.

Lauren and I also sing on the Dracula CD together...I know, I know...it will be out someday.

We're going to have a blast and can't wait to see you all there.

Smelling The Metaphorical Roses

I realized today, as I walked the Uppa Baby (Range Rover) Stroller through the remaining remnants of snowy, slushy and sometimes icy paths in the park that I haven't been taking the time to smell the roses.

So I did...metaphorically...because I couldn't find any roses in the park at that moment.

He were are in a very difficult and trying economical times for many of us, war blazing through Gaza, questions of what will happen in the future.  Will the market be better? Will the housing market rebound? Will Obama be the change to make the changes we can believe in?  Will there be more bailouts to bailout the bailouts?  Will the wars ever stop...forever?

As my mind raced with thoughts and concerns I looked down and saw these two little eyes peering back at me from beneath the warm blanket that covered the stroller.  Just looking at me as I walked.  And as my eyes met hers...she smiled and my heart melted.

That's all it took.  Just one tiny little smile, from one tiny little being...who for all intents and purposes, was just "being" a being.

And then I realized that the tiny little being I was looking at was not that tiny at all. Her spirit is huge.

I remembered that tomorrow is another day, that the next hour, the next minute, the next second has yet to be lived and we can create those moments new.

We, as a people, are a powerful and resilient bunch.  Given a task more often that not we rise to the occasion.  Sometimes to just takes something to remind us that we can, even if it's a simple as a smile.

Come and visit at Sardi's, maybe there will be some smiles:  Smiles

Guest Number 1

So here we go...in no particular order.

The first guest I'm going to announce is for the February 7th concert and it is...

The incredible Jenny Powers

Jenny is currently originating the role of Gina in "Happiness" Susan Stroman's new musical at Lincoln Centre Theatre.  On Broadway she played Rizzo in "Grease" and Meg in "Little Women."  She has so many more credits incredible credits it wold take the entire blog to share them.

I'm so excited to have Jenny in the line-up.  Jenny played 'Lucy' in many of the Tale Of Two Cities presentations we did over the years.  Not only is she a great friend but she's also an amazing talent who has really taken New York theatre by storm over the past couple of years.

So grab your tickets to see Jenny on Saturday, February 7th and trust me...you'll love what you hear.

Guests

So here we are...poised on yet another wonderful opportunity to bring in great friends who will sing some great music.

The requests are coming in and I've put out some calls as well. We've already got a couple confirmed guests...I'll tell you in the days to come.  Trust me, they're gonna blow your socks off. Amazing voices, amazing people.

For now, things are going very well.  Jeremy and I have picked a list of songs, some old, some new, a couple never sung in public before and we're seeing what fits best.

On another note, we got a great reviews form Richmond Shepard from Performing Arts Insider and lively-arts.com which should be posted soon.

We really want this to be a special event, and with the Valentine's weekend shows it provides the perfect night out.  Dinner and a romantic evening literally among the stars...of Broadway that is.

Here's the ticket link one again:  Love Songs

LOVE SONGS

So..it's official.  Sardi's has indeed asked me to create another show and I'm jazzed about it.  "Love Songs" is on it's way.

It's been wonderful to have had Sardi's to hang out in over the holidays and I'm glad that we could all enjoy the holiday spirit together.

When I was apporached about continuing in the venue I thought of all my friends who are now out of work since the recent unpleasantness of last Sunday.

And then I thought...let's do another concert series and I'll have even more opportunity to bring friends and colleagues in to share their talents with the audiences.

So...that's what I'm doing.  More guests, more music and more fun.

The Governor, Kenneth Cole and the Dreidel

What a crowd last night.

We Sold Out our house last night which is always fun to do.

Former Governor Mario Cuomo came with his wife.  Kenneth Cole and family were also in attendance as was Steve Rankin (an old buddy and the fight director on the upcoming Guys and Dolls on Broadway) and as always, it was great to see them.

Part of the fun of my show is the audience interaction so when we got to the Dreidel song and talked about the missing additional lyrics I looked down and saw Ken on his Blackberry. I naturally joked that he was doing business during the show but he was really looking up the additional lyrics for the Dreidel song on the internet.

What fun...so I read them off his Blackberry only to find that what he didn't notice was that they were the lyrics to the 'South Park' version of the song.  We sang just a couple of verses of that one...

Anyway, great show, great people, great friends.  Our last Holiday Show is today with Jack Noseworthy.

Tom Cavanagh

What a delight when I got a message from my dear old friend Tom Cavanagh with whom I did Urinetown on Broadway a few years back.  Tom..also famous for his role as 'Ed' on the TV series 'ED' and his upcoming new series "Trust Me."  Tom and Sarah Chalke and I also did a movie together called 'Alchemy' which was a total blast.

So fun to work with friends...and I had that pleasure again tonight when Tom and his wife came by the concert. Tom popped up onstage to help out with the 12 Days Of Christmas (he was the partridge in a pear tree).

My good buddy Marc Kudisch came by too.  Marc sang a couple of tunes and we had some laughs.  I've known him for over 16 years.  Again, great to share time with friends.

We've only got two shows left on The Holiday Concert but glad to say we're not wrapping things up forever.  And there's a future ahead.

Keep your eyes peeled here and sign up for those newsletter updates.

Natalie and Kevin Earley tomorrow night.  So if you want to stop by for he last bit of Holiday magic...click here:  HERE
